Formal registration for the workshop is now closed.

The UKPN is proud to present the 3rd workshop in the UKPN Career Skills Workshop series at the University of Sheffield on the 4th-6th of November.

The workshop is supported by the IPY, The Royal Astronomical Society, NERC, British Antarctic Survey, The International Glaciological Society and The Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society.

The workshop is aimed at early career scientists such as master students, Ph.D. students and post-doctoral researchers. It will provide a fantastic opportunity for peer-to-peer networking and include a poster session and a workshop dinner. The event is free for all members of the UK Polar Network and you do not need to be based in the UK to join the UKPN or to participate in the workshop.

Following the huge success of the UKPN Atmospheric Sciences Workshop, this Cryospheric Science Workshop will have a similar format including a mix of talks by established researchers on their science and their career paths, group discussions on career development, and practical hands-on sessions.

The aims of the workshop are to:

- promote the sharing of ideas between early career researchers and encourage new collaborations
- increase the technical and scientific knowledge of the participants
- provide information and advice on careers in polar science

Planned sessions include talks on remote sensing of ice, ice core studies, snow science, ice flow modelling and paleoglaciology as well as a practical on ice flow models and a workshop on paper writing and publishing by Magnus Magnusson, Secretary General of the International Glaciological Society. There will also be a panel session on field techniques and a poster session with prizes for best poster. You can see the programme here (subject to change): Programme and the abstract booklet can be downloaded following this link: Abstract booklet

Confirmed speakers include Drs. Liz Morris (SPRI), O.B.E., Edward Hanna (Sheffield), Nick Rutter (Northumbria), Ian Rutt (Swansea), Kathryn Rose (BAS), Chris Clark (Sheffield), Neil Ross (Edinburgh), Rupert Gladstone (Bristol), Aoibheann Kilfeather (Durham), Liz Thomas (BAS) and Andy Hodson (Sheffield) as well as Magnus Magnusson from IGS.

As part of the workshop a training session in Education and Outreach will be held. If you are interested in doing outreach activities this is the session for you! Participants will get the chance to talk to people who have experience with outreach activities, listen to examples of school talks and discuss how to communicate science to school children on all levels.

All participants are encouraged to present a poster, and will be given the opportunity to help in the organization of the workshop, such as by chairing sessions. The UKPN also has some funds to support participants' travel and accommodation costs.

While some funding is available to help cover some travel/accommodation expenses, we encourage participants to find other funding to cover these costs. Many universities across England have so-called "Roberts Funds" provided by the government which will cover costs associated with transferrable skills training for postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers. The career skills training, presentation sessions, and Education and Outreach training make this workshop a good candidate for such funding. Contact your department administror to find out more details.

As an addition to the workshop, we are considering an informal hike in the Peak District on the Saturday after the workshop. Please let us know if you might be interested.
